How to Care for Your Septic System

Here's are some do's and don'ts when it comes to caring for your septic system.

Do:

  1. Do have your tank pumped every 2 to 3 years for an average family of 4, as per the Department of Environment
  2. Do pay attention to toilet paper consumption and what ply you use
  3. Do pay attention to extra ground or surface water adding unwanted pressure to your drainage field
  4. Do know where your tank is and how to access it in case of a back up
  5. Do have your baffles and filters inspected to make sure they are intact and functional
  6. Do use liquid laundry detergent and dish washer soap
  7. Do pay attention to warning signs and address them promptly

Don't:

  1. Don’t dispose of paper towels, baby wipes or any feminine products by flushing
  2. Don’t dispose of chemicals or excess cleaning products in your tank — they will kill good bacteria
  3. Don’t drive heavy vehicles or equipment over any part of the septic system
  4. Don’t plant trees, shrubs or gardens over the drainage bed
